How to Play Red Apple Green Apple

When teaching young children, you can incorporate the apple theme to games that the children already know. For a physical education activity, here is a guide for playing the game "Red Apple/Green Apple," which is a spinoff of the preschool favorite "Red Light/Green Ligh." This activity involves the basic locomotive movements of running, jumping and walking. It also helps the children to listen for commands and follow directions.

Instructions

    • 1

Trace the outline of an apple on to the pieces of red and green poster board. Cut out the shapes. With a marker, label the green apple with "GO" and the red apple with "STOP."

    • 2

Line up the children side by side. Make sure that everyone has sufficient room to move.

    • 3

Prepare instructions. On a note card, write down the movements that you wish for the children to perform. Doing this will save time as well as prevent any voids in the middle of the game.

    • 4

Explain rules. The teacher should give a command, then hold up the green apple. Instruct the children to watch for the red apple so they will know when to stop. Children who do not stop when the red apple is shown will have return to the "starting spot" and start again.
