How to Use Montessori Number Boards to Teach Counting Higher Than 10

Montessori number boards are a series of slotted, wooden boards that hold number cards. They are used to help children practice counting to numbers higher than ten. They demonstrate the different numbers that are possible by presenting the numerals 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90. This not only helps the child learn to count by tens, but it makes the progression through the numbers one to one hundred easy to chart visually.

Instructions

      Position the Montessori number boards on the floor mat. The boards are a set of two columns, one with the numbers 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 and one with the numbers 60, 70, 80 and 90. They are always used with one stacked on top of the other so that you have a continuous column from 10 to 90. They are split only for storage purposes.

      Point to each number in the sequence while giving the name. The child will probably already be somewhat familiar with the numbers that you say. This lesson is to help her match the numerals with the names. You should point to the numbers in order and say each name only once. Speak clearly but do not distort the pronunciation of the word.

      Ask the child to point at various numbers. You do not need to request the numbers in order. Rather, you might say "show me thirty" or "which one is fifty?"

      Point to various numbers while requesting the name from the student. As before, you will not work sequentially, but do make sure that you eventually cover all the numbers. For example, you might point at the 60 card while saying "what is the name of this one?"

      Point to and name the numbers in order together. To summarize the lesson, you and the student should each point to and name the numbers sequentially as you did on your own to initiate the lesson.

      Keep the lesson in an easily accessible location. The student should be encouraged to work with the number boards on his own whenever he likes.
