Preschool Native American Art Projects

Native Americans wear headdresses for many different activities such as religious rituals and powwows. Men, women and children can wear headdresses, and they can be made out of many types of materials. Making headdresses with preschoolers is a good way to practice fine motor skills through cutting and pasting, and to learn concepts such as pattern and design. Native American headdresses can be made in correlation with units dealing with culture or celebrations.
  1. Learn About Native American Headdresses

    • Native-languages.org has examples of different types of headdresses that are used and worn in Native American culture. The feather warbonnets are what most people think of as headdresses, but there are other kinds such as roach headdresses made from stiff animal hair, basket hats made from woven fibers, feather headbands using feathers, and otter fur turbans using animal skins and beads. Look at the pictures with preschoolers and learn about the different kinds of headdresses. Many headdresses use patterns to create the design of the headdress. Discuss with preschoolers what a pattern is and how it is found in nature, such as repeating lines in leaves, and also man-made, like a wall of bricks. Native Americans use nature as influences for their headdresses by incorporating images of animals into the design, or using parts of an animal to make one.

    Create a Native American Headdress

    • Cut out shapes from colored construction paper along with long strips, about 3 inches wide, to make headdresses. Have preschoolers glue shapes onto a strip of construction paper, creating a pattern either with shapes or colors. Allow strips to dry while gathering materials to finish the headdresses. Look for flowers, leaves, twigs and grasses around your home or school to use. Using feathers, beads and the materials found in nature, glue them onto dried strips of construction paper. When dry, measure headdresses to fit the child's head.

    Celebrate

    • Headdresses are worn for celebrating, so plan a special celebration to wear the headdresses. A powwow is a special celebration in Native American culture. Create invitations using materials left over from making headdresses and invite family and friends to a powwow. There is usually drumming, dancing and singing at a powwow, so get out instruments and practice. During the powwow, have preschoolers wear their headdresses and play drums, dance and sing for family and friends. Encourage everyone to participate in the powwow.
