For preschoolers, field trips include trips to local businesses, farms and public facilities, including libraries and post offices. Preschoolers in Pennsylvania have a wide variety of interesting and popular field trips to choose from, and all involve a unique way to engage young minds.
  1. Children's Museum of Pittsburgh

    • For preschoolers in western Pennsylvania, the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh offers an educational and hands-on day. This museum is specifically designed for students, and a variety of instructor-led trips are available. The Guided Field Trip option, available for $8 a student, allows an instructor to lead a class of preschoolers and their teacher throughout the museum for up to three hours. The Teacher's Choice option, available for $7 a student, allows students to explore the museum at their own pace for up to three hours, while museum educators teach students, provide assistance and answer questions. Finally, a Focus Field Trip option allows students to explore the museum for two hours with an hour of an instructor-led tour through the museum. The museum also offers daily puppet shows and several workshops, including workshops in clay making, wood working and boat building using common household materials.

    The Franklin Institute Science Museum

    • Preschoolers in eastern Pennsylvania would benefit greatly from a field trip to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. This science museum offers a variety of hands-on exhibits, and educational Imax and 3-D movies are offered daily. The Giant Heart, a permanent exhibit in the museum, allows preschoolers to walk through an enlarged version of the heart, educating students about health, fitness and wellness. The museum also offers a permanent air show exhibit, an observatory, a space exhibit and an interactive train factory where preschoolers can learn about trains while creating their own locomotives.

    Penn's Cave

    • Preschoolers in central Pennsylvania can take a field trip to Penn's Cave, America's only all-water cavern. This incredible site features a variety of crystals and interesting rock formations, and daily tours take students along an underground stream by motorboat. The site also offers a wildlife park, which includes thousands of acres of forests that have been carefully preserved and serve as a habitat for hundreds of animals, birds and plants. Students touring the wildlife preserve may spot bison, bears, deer, elk and wolves. The site is open all year except for January; cavern tours are approximately 90 minutes long.
