Preschoolers can learn about speedboats by making their own. You can choose to have individual students build their own speedboat or you can have small groups of children create their own speedboats. Either way, provide the children with materials such as wood and Styrofoam to make their speedboat.
After they have created a boat, your preschool class can have a speedboat race. Have the children hang a finish line banner and fill a long plastic tub with water. You can then allow the children to float their speedboats to the finish line.
Additionally, you can award prizes for first, second and third place for the speedboat race.
Reading a book about speedboats will help to gain the preschoolers interest in speedboats. During circle time, read one or two books, depending on their interest. "Boats for Bedtime" by Olga Litowinsky is a book about all different kinds of boats, including speedboats. Another book, recommended by www.stepbystepcc.com. is "Boats" by Anne F. Rockwell.
Songs about speedboats are another way to create excitement about this subject with the preschool class. You can make up your own or sing a song similar to "Row, Row, Row Your Boat," but replace the words with:
"Vroom, Vroom, Vroom Goes the Speedboat
Speedily Down the Stream
Merrily, Merrily, Merrily, Merrily
Life is But a Dream."
