Ask the children how many people are in their family. Trace shapes of people, one per family member, onto a piece of construction paper. Cut the shapes out for the children if they are too young to cut. If they have already learned how to cut, let the children cut out their shapes. Let the children decorate their construction paper people to look like the members in their family. Make sure they decorate a paper person for themselves as well. Give them yarn in black, brown, red and yellow to glue on the paper people to represent hair. Write the name of the family member on the back of the paper person. Tape the completed families on the wall, and let the preschoolers talk about their family members individually.
Ask the parents to send in a picture of themselves as children or babies as well as a picture of their child when she was a baby. Place a label on the back with the parent's name and child's name so you won't mix up the pictures. Put the parents' pictures in one container and the children's pictures in another. Let the children take turns pulling a parent's picture out of the bucket and trying to match it with the child's picture. Some of the children will recognize their parent's picture and the picture of themselves, while other children may have a difficult time. Provide hints when necessary. Make sure everyone has a turn to play this family match game.
Ask parents to send a dish to preschool that is the family's favorite. Set a large sheet in the middle of the classroom and enjoy a potluck lunch. As the children are eating, ask them to tell about what dish they brought, why it's their family's favorite and whether there is a special story about their dish that they want to share with the class.
