Preschool Ideas for Kisses Themes

A preschool kisses theme is a sweet alternative to the traditional Valentine's Day theme. A kisses theme would also work well in May for Mother's Day. You'll find lots of children's picture books to use with a kissing theme. Add some math, circle time and art activities and you'll have a theme that preschoolers will be sure to love.
  1. Book Ideas for a Kisses Theme

    • There are many age-appropriate books about kissing that you can use in your kisses theme. "Hugs and Kisses" by Christophe Loupy, "I Lost My Kisses" by Trudie Trewin and "Kiss Kiss" by Margaret Wild and Bridget Strevens-Marzo are a few cute choices where animals are the main characters. "Counting Kisses" by Karen Katz is a kiss-themed book that you can use for a math lesson on counting back from ten. Preschoolers will laugh at Annalisa's refusal to kiss the milking cow in "Kiss the Cow!" by Phyllis Root.

    Math Activities

    • You'll find lots of preschool math ideas that you can do with a few bags of Hershey Kisses. Give each child a small cup filled with the foil-wrapped candies. First ask the children to estimate how many Kisses are in their cups. Then have each child pour out his Kisses and count them. Group the children into pairs and ask the pairs to compare their Kisses. Who has more? Who has fewer? Finally present some simple addition problems to the children and let them use their candy as counters to help solve the problems. On another day, let the children use Hershey Kisses with different colored wrappers to practice making patterns.

    Circle Time

    • Making kissing the theme of your circle time with this animal kisses activity. Start by reading the book "Animal Kisses" by Barney Saltzberg. Then let the children practice different animal kisses. Preschoolers will giggle as they try to imitate sloppy puppy kisses, nose-twitching bunny kisses, fish kisses and more. Show them a few kinds of animal kisses and then let them show you how they think different animals kiss. What would an elephant kiss look like? Or a snake kiss?

    Kissing Fish Craft

    • Make a kissing fish craft with your preschoolers. To make each fish, glue a large heart and a medium-sized heart onto a piece of paper with the points of the hearts touching (see Reference 1). This makes the fish's body and tail. For the kissing mouth, add a very small heart to the front of the body, where the fish's mouth would be. Then add two small hearts to the top and the side of the body to make fins. Make another fish turned the opposite way so that it faces the first one and looks like the two fish are kissing.
