Winter Theme Ideas for Preschoolers

A little imagination will uncover ideas that will delight the preschooler and provide hours of teaching fun. Children in this age group are enthusiastic about the change in seasons and will be able to add to list making when a topic is announced.

“The turn of the season presents new possibilities for learning,” says Carol Hindman, kindergarten teacher in Old Lyme, Connecticut. “In winter there are a number of new lesson opportunities—pairs, weather, animals—lots of teachable moments for children of all ages.”
  1. Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow

    • Weather is one of those lessons that can teach a preschooler through high school aged student with ease. For the preschool aged child, start by asking them to describe snow. It’s cold, wet, and flaky—ask them about what it must feel like to make a snowman. List all of the words that start with “snow”—flake, man, storm, globe, boots and so on. List things that are white.

    Animals

    • Talk about what animals hibernate during the winter months. Ask the children to pick an animal and draw its winter home. Talk about where birds go, and why we don’t see certain animals in the winter. Make a list of animals that we do see in the winter months.

    Pairs

    • Ask the children to name things that come in pairs—boots, mittens, earmuffs. Play games that ask the children to pair things that go together—cookies and milk, hat and scarf and so on.

    Warmth in Winter

    • Talk about things that make you warm. Soup, hats, boots, blankets and hot cocoa are good examples. Prepare a soup recipe in class and serve it to the children.

    Opposites

    • Another preschool lesson can be the introduction of opposites. Until now the child may not be aware of the concept. Start with the idea of winter and ask the students to tell what activities they might do in winter; then continue by asking in what season would they be unable to complete the activities. When they hit upon summer, you can begin to branch out to discover other opposite concepts: warm to cold, asleep to awake, and so on.
