Dramatic Play Theme Ideas for Preschoolers in the Winter

Dramatic play is an important part of the preschool student's growing mind. The dramatic play section of the classroom allows the students to pretend to be someone else, which eases social shyness and fosters conversations not normally engaged. The dramatic play section also allows for exploration in other cultures, places and routines. Use the students' experiences and the teachers' knowledge to discover winter themes through play.
  1. Environment Decoration

    • When teaching about winter, creating a space that is decorated properly is essential. Dramatic play section decoration depicting snow-covered land or houses can teach the children who may never seen it about snow. Teach the students about snow, then introduce them to the new dramatic play area. Inside, have a construction paper fireplace attached to the wall, a fake-window picture depicting a snowy hill on another wall, new winter clothing and holiday foods from multiple cultures.

    What's the Weather?

    • The clothing in the dramatic play area needs to change with each season. As winter comes, the clothing must change from warmer weather outfits. The postman's outfit changes from shorts and short-sleeved shirt to pants and postal sweater and coat. Scarves, woolen hats and socks, snowsuits and boots can replace the summer items of beach balls, sunglasses, and floppy hats. Umbrellas and rubber boots are items that are used all year, even in the summer, so these items can stay.

    Dress the Snowman

    • Create a snowman out of felt. Wrap three Styrofoam balls of three different sizes with white felt cloth. Use large staples to ensure the felts stays on the Styrofoam. Cut out different winter outfits from multicolored felt, such as long pants, jeans, sweaters, hats, and boots. Make sure the outfits will fit onto the corresponding areas of the snowman by checking the size. Create multiple faces for the snowman as well using different sizes of felt carrots for the nose and different shaped black circles for the eyes. Keep the felt pieces in a separate container used in the dramatic play area.

    Hibernation Section

    • Teach the students about animals that hibernate. Read to them books such as "Time to Sleep" by Denise Fleming to teach them which animals hibernate and how it is done. Then, with the students' help, turn a refrigerator box into a large cave in which the students can take turns hibernating during dramatic play. When a student climbs inside the cave, the teacher should announce that the students should remain quiet to allow the hibernating child to sleep.
