Street Sign Safety for Preschools

Whether playing outside or traveling to and from school or around the neighborhood, children need to be educated about street signs. Use key symbols to teach them while they are in preschool.
  1. Stop Sign

    • For this sign, the most important characteristic is the color red, as most preschoolers cannot read. Red in general means stop when dealing with traffic matters.

    Railroad Crossing

    • This sign is yellow with a black “X” in the middle. Look both ways (left and right) and listen for an oncoming train. Yellow means be careful when used on street signs and traffic symbols.

    Do Not Enter

    • This sign is also red, with one white stripe in the center. It is a circle.

    Crosswalk Sign

    • Probably the most easily understandable for children, this sign has a silhouette of a mother and child crossing the street. This means it is a safe place to walk, but it is still important to look both ways to check for cars.

    Expert Insight

    • According to Teaching Strategies Inc., young children learn well through activities and games. Make symbols for each sign. For example, hold hands out straight, palms up for a “Stop Sign.” Hold out images of the signs and have the students act them out.
