How to Make a Preschool Substitute Teacher Folder

Be ready for the unexpected by creating a preschool substitute teacher packet full of information to help your substitute get through the day. Having a fully prepared packet of ideas and useful tips makes the day easier and less frustrating for students and the substitute. Creating a preschool substitute packet takes a small amount of time but will provide hours of positive results on days when sickness or an emergency keeps you from the classroom.

Instructions

    • 1

Find an empty folder to use for the preschool substitute packet. Place a label on the front so that others can easily find it.

    • 2

Write out a class list. If possible, take pictures of the children to include in the substitute packet to help the substitute recognize students. Include information about the children that could be helpful for the substitute, such as "Hannah is in the middle of potty training so might need extra reminders to use the bathroom." Keep the class list updated.

    • 3

Draw a sketch of the classroom. Highlight areas that are important for the substitute to be aware of, including doors that must remain closed or locked during the day or where to go when children's' hands need to be washed.

    • 4

Write out the schedule of the day. Go into thorough detail of what happens at what time, without concern if it is too much information. Preschool children go through many transitions during the day, so include helpful tips to keep children on track when moving between activities.

    • 5

Include a detailed emergency plan for the substitute to follow if any emergency situation occurs. Include all emergency contact numbers for the children and community, as needed.

    • 6

Write out lesson plans and activities for at least two days of activities and projects for the preschool substitute to use. Find fun and interesting activities that correlate with any themes being discussed, such as art projects, music activities and outdoor games.

    • 7

Include small rewards for the children, such as stickers, and other items such as special books to read and games to play.

    • 8

Include a list of the other teachers within the building, as well as administrators. Make note of special teachers who may visit, such as music or art specialists.

    • 9

Place all items within the substitute teacher packet and keep in an easily accessible location. Update the substitute teacher pack monthly, if needed.
