Provide scarves and a clear spac fore the students to move around. Play several different types of music, and allow the students to get up and dance or move to the music. As you do this, discuss with the children how the music makes them feel and how they can use their movements to reflect the music.
An easy indoor game for students is to create an obstacle course and have students follow the leader. If you have indoor foam or tumbling equipment, you can use this as part of the exercise. If not, you can put tape down on the floor to represent a balance beam, as well as a hopscotch pattern and a spiraling circle. Students will take turns leading each other through the obstacle course. They can each choose a different order and different ways to complete an obstacle. For example, one student may walk across the balance beam and another one may hop across it.
Relay races can take place inside a gym or even in a classroom. The relay race can involve a trip around the room doing a variety of movement skills. One station could have the students do five jumping jacks. Another station could have students toss balls into a box. A third station could have them do toe touches, and then the students could do a crabwalk back to the line so the next student could start.
Parachutes allow students to move around the school and to explore movement in a creative way. You will need a parachute, which you can order from a school supply store, and a large indoor space to play with the parachute. Students can make the parachute shrink by moving in toward the center of the circle. The students can move out to make the circle bigger. Additionally they can make balls bounce in the center. You can have students run under the parachute to the other side, as well. There are many different games, and students enjoy the novelty of the parachute.
