As parents and teachers, warn preschoolers of the dangers of playing in or near electrical sockets. It is not safe to place anything metal in an electrical socket, as this can cause severe electrical shock that can burn the skin or even cause death. Instruct children not to stick their fingers in electrical sockets, or to play with a wire that may be coming apart on the socket. Purchase and install socket covers in day cares and homes to keep children from being injured.
When cooking or cleaning with your preschooler at home, set an example by unplugging all electrical items before cleaning or moving them. For instance, teach your child that appliances like the blender or can opener should be disconnected from electrical sockets before cleaning, in order to avoid injury, as these items contain blades that move very quickly due to electricity. Teach your child not to yank cords when unplugging an appliance, as this can cause the wires in the cord to become loose.
Make preschoolers aware of the dangers of using electricity near water. Explain that electricity can move through the water into their bodies and injure them. Teach pre-schoolers to never place electrical devices near the bathtub or sink. If you are cooking with your child, dry your preschooler's hands completely before he or she comes in contact with any kitchen appliance that is run by electricity. Preschool-age children should never operate any kitchen machinery on their own.
It is very dangerous to fly a kite near electrical wiring; if the kite gets caught in the wiring, this can cause electric shock. If there are power lines that run through any trees that you have in the front or backyard, warn your preschooler not to climb these trees or play with the wires. Teach your preschooler that it is not safe to play outside when there is lightning.
Teach your preschooler(s) to report any potential electrical hazards to you. If they see any loose wires on the ground inside or outside, they should tell you immediately, without trying to remove the wires themselves. Warn preschool-age children not to touch anything that is touching loose wires.
