Playschool Theme Ideas

Many parents choose too send their children to playschool at 3 or 4 years of age. It is the time to learn and explore new things. The child at this age learns by testing the world. She is curious about how things sound, feel, work ... . Her senses of taste, touch and smell are part of her tools for learning. Most of all she learns by doing. As she expands her language skills and interacts with others her age, she learns her place in the world.
  1. Nutrition

    • Playschool is a good setting in which to learn about nutrition. Let children explore this theme by learning the names of foods such as fruits and vegetable. Teachers can impart the alphabet and colors through games and activities about nutrition. A real or pretend picnic gives the playschooler the opportunity to touch and smell foods. Teach the playschooler to distinguish between regular foods and those that are reserved for festival occasions.

    Safety

    • Parents want young children to start learning safety basics early. This theme can cover school bus safety through practice getting on and off a pretend or real bus. The little ones can study the concept of stop and go, look and listen. Firefighters and trucks are always a big hit with this age group. Take a trip to the fire station to tune them in to fire safety. Make a dress-up game to teach about helping professionals such as police and crossing guards.

    Seasons

    • Let playschoolers explore the changing of the seasons. Take them out on a field trip to collect leaves; involve them in planting seeds. These activities show the cycles of growth in nature. Teach the names of clothing worn during different types of weather. Engage the young ones in an activity that allows them to decide appropriate clothes for a season. Teach hot, cold, snow, rain and wind. Show the children how different sports are played in different seasons. They can participate in a playschool version of football or baseball and learn to count by counting players.

    Character

    • Teach playschool participants about various character skills: kindness, sharing and responsibility. Make craft items and show them how to give them as gifts to classmates. Read stories about kind deeds. Let them make up a kind deed to do as a group. Show them how to be helpful by assigning decorating tasks in the room and also encouraging them to help one another with the tasks. Teach responsibility by showing them how to recycle. Place newspapers and washed plastic containers in a bin with other items. The children can select the recyclables and bag them; learning sorting and grouping skills as they go.
