Pick up the theme of dreams and dream interpretation by having your students make collage pictures. Your activity will echo the work of surrealists, who found that combining contrasting images or objects could mirror the apparently illogical nature of dreams. Cut interesting and exotic pictures out of magazines, gathering at least four to five images per student. Place all the images in a hat or basket and let students draw out four or five images apiece. Have them paste their images onto a piece of paper, drawing around them with crayons or markers. After the students have made their pictures, let them give you an "interpretation" of their creation and write it down for them on the back of the page.
Let students design their own coats of many colors, just like Little Joe and Joseph wore. Prepare for the activity by cutting a basic vest out of large, brown paper bags. Provide each student with a vest as well as crayons, magic markers or paint. For a more advanced or closely monitored activity, let them apply white glue in decorative squiggles, covering the glue patterns with colorful sequins. Avoid using glitter, which makes for a more difficult cleanup than larger sequins. If your students are mature enough to use glue, you can also let them glue strips of fabric, felt, ribbon or natural fibers to their coats, creating interesting textures. Let any glue or paint dry completely before letting the students try on their creations.
Like many VeggieTales videos, "The Ballad of Little Joe" features a short intermission with a lighthearted song. The song from "The Ballad of Little Joe" is called "Belly Button," performed by a fictitious, animated group called "Boyz in the Sink." For a dynamic group lesson, have the class sing the song together as a circle time activity. Once the students have learned the song, incorporate related hand movements and whole body movements. This will help highly kinesthetic learners to engage with and remember the song.
