Children will be expected to demonstrate self-confidence, self-direction, participate in group routines and identify and express feelings. Additionally, children are expected to exhibit a positive interaction with adults and other children, and demonstrate focusing skills and pro-social behavior. Teachers will provide activities and materials for furthering the learning process at the child's level of development.
Children will be expected to express themselves by showing an appreciation for music, dance and movement, storytelling and dramatic play and an awareness for visual arts. This includes an appreciation for drawing, painting and sculpting. Teachers will provide opportunities for children to participate in the creative arts by creating activities promoting structured and unstructured dance, providing musical instruments, singing a variety of songs, promoting participation in storytelling and plays, and providing developmentally appropriate supplies.
Children are expected to develop the ability to make nutritious food choices, become aware of hazards to their health and develop gross motor skills and fine motor skills in activities where it is needed. The teacher will show children how to limit the spread of germs, supervise hand-washing when necessary, promote regular bathing and brushing the teeth, and guide the children in serving themselves and others. Opportunities will be provided to expose children to a variety of nutritious foods. Children will be taught safe practices indoors and out.
Children are expected to respond to environmental sounds, conversations and directions, converse effectively in their home language, and display emergent reading and writing skills. Children will also learn that other people may used different languages, including sign language. The teacher will provide age-appropriate activities in listening and help the children develop a print and phonological awareness. Knowledge and enjoyment of books will be developed and well as writing skills..
Children are expected to understand number and numerical operations, spatial concepts, patterns, relationships, classification, sequence and temporal awareness. Children will demonstrate the ability to use mathematical knowledge to solve problems. Teachers will provide the books and materials to promote number exploration.
Children will be expected to develop inquiry skills, the ability to observe and investigate properties of living and non-living objects and become aware of the human responsibility to the environment. Teachers will provide the supportive classroom environment to encourage children to use their science inquiry skills. The classroom will contain open-ended nature materials for the children to explore. The children will gain experience in technology by having access to such items as computers, video and audio equipment, cameras and measuring tools.
Children will be able to identify their own unique characteristics, communicate about family and friends, contribute to the classroom community and show knowledge of their neighborhood. Teachers will have students engage in activites about their differences and similarites, and provide a diverse range of materals to help children compare and contrast traits. Materials will also be provided to explore different types of homes, such as apartment buildings and private homes.
