Teaching Spanish to Preschoolers

Despite the fact that preschool children are not able to understand grammatical terms and concepts, they are able to build a significant foreign language vocabulary if exposed to words regularly. Beginning Spanish language instruction at the preschool level can be a rewarding experience for you and your students. Through games, videos, stories and other activities you can help preschool students build a foundation for Spanish studies in elementary, middle, and high school.

Instructions

    • 1

Introduce simple Spanish vocabulary to preschoolers by showing Dora the Explorer videos. These interactive videos will encourage children to listen to Spanish words and repeat what they hear.

    • 2

Speak Spanish regularly in the classroom. Do not speak in full Spanish sentences, but use basic vocabulary and connect the words you say with objects in the classroom. When using words such as "mesa" or "gato" for table and cat, point to those objects and ask students to repeat what they have heard. Introduce two new words per week.

    • 3

Play an audio CD with Spanish children's music in the background while students are playing or working on independent activities. Preschoolers will develop listening skills as they hear common Spanish words repeated in the music.

    • 4

Read the children a story from an Hispanic culture. The story should be primarily in English but should include one or more Spanish words. Read this story to your students multiple times per week and ask them to say the words with you as they memorize them.

    • 5

Use picture flash cards to reinforce Spanish words that your students have learned. These flash cards can include animals, colors and objects. Be careful not to choose flash cards with many words or smaller pictures, as most preschool students have not yet learned to read.
