Free Preschool Math Games

Math games for preschoolers should be simple and fun. Children can learn to recognize and identify numbers and place them in order by playing these games. They can also learn basic addition and subtraction skills. Preschoolers can begin to develop a strong math base on which they can build as they grow and progress.
  1. Cheerios Necklaces

    • This game allows children to practice counting numbers in order. Give each child a handful of Cheerios and a 12-to-18-inch length of yarn. Help the children tie a knot in one end of the yarn. Let the children take turns rolling a die and counting the dots on it. Have the children string that number of Cheerios onto their yarn. The first child to fill up his yarn wins. Help the children tie the yarn ends together to make a necklace.

    Ladybug Math

    • Ladybug Math is a game in which preschoolers can learn to recognize numbers and count in order. Color and cut out 10 ladybugs from construction paper. The ladybugs should not have spots. Write a number, 1 through 10, on the back of each ladybug. Cut out small circles from black construction paper. Pass out a ladybug to each child and a small handful of circles. Ask each child to identify the number on her ladybug and glue the correct number of dots to its wings. Once the children have correctly added the spots, mix the ladybugs up and ask the children to place them in numerical order.

    Number Dash

    • This math game helps children recognize and identify numbers. Draw large numbers from 1 to 10 on pieces of paper and place them on the floor around the room. Write corresponding numbers on index cards and mix them up. Have the children sit in a circle on the floor and draw an index card from the pile. Hold the number up and say its name. The children then race to find and stand by the same number on the floor. Have the children return to the circle and repeat the process. After they have learned to recognize their numbers, stop holding the index cards up and just say the number.

    Fishbowl Fun

    • Students learn basic addition and subtraction through this math activity. Give each preschooler a piece of paper that has drawings of five to 10 fish. Have the children color and cut out the fish. Give each child a piece of blue construction paper with a fishbowl drawn on it. Have the children place all their fish onto the fishbowl. Tell the children a story about the fish for which they will need to subtract or add fish to their bowl. For example, tell the children that four of their fish went to visit their friends. Ask the children to remove four fish from their bowls and count how many fish remain.
