Fun Games & Activity Ideas for Preschoolers

Children often learn best when they can interact and be involved in some form of a game. With preschoolers, typically you have limited attention spans and active imaginations, which require activities that are both engaging and educational.
  1. Singing Games

    • Children love music and it is the perfect opportunity to not only entertain them, but educate them as well. The simple song of "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" can turn into a rhythmic game, but also teach preschoolers about their body. Start by singing the song slowly so children can adjust to how the song goes and show them the body parts they should point at with each verse. Then slowly speed up the song and see who can keep up. The song can always be changed up to point out ears, fingers, eyes and mouth to keep the song different for the preschoolers.

    Arts and Crafts

    • Every child loves to make something that they can take home and show to their family or even display on the family fridge. Allow the children to create their own drawings with finger paints and their hands. Ensure they have numerous colors of construction paper as well as paints so that they can be as creative as they want. With a paintbrush dipped in a mixture of half water and half glue, allow the children to create a mosaic with torn pieces of tissue paper and colorful construction paper sheets.

    Outdoor Fun

    • Playing outdoors is a great way to help the imaginative minds of preschoolers explore the world around them. On a warm sunny day have the children go outside and play a game of nature walk. Here, each child will have the chance to point out what they see as they explore the play yard area and what they thought of it. Another activity can be as simple as giving children a chance to show their artistic side with chalk and a blank canvas of sidewalk. Let them draw pictures of their family, favorite animals and practice writing their name.

    Imagination Games

    • There is nothing more animated than the imagination of a preschooler. When looking for activities to entertain the minds of preschoolers, games that harness that imagination will keep children entertained and possibly even teach them something. Some good imagination games to try can be animal charades. Have several stuffed animals placed into a pillow case or bag. Have a child remove a stuffed animal and place it back in the pillow case or bag. Then they must act like that animal and the other children guess what they are. The winning child will have their turn to act out next. If you want keep the games simple, try a game of "When I Grow Up." Have the children sit in a circle and say what sports they will play in school or what job they will have when they grow up.
