Preschool Games With Colors

Learning to identify colors is an important preschool skill. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends learning colors through games as opposed to drill and practice. Games help maintain children's interest and excitement about learning. Add a little variety to your preschool classroom with these fun color games.
  1. Color Dance

    • Place colored cubes, marbles or crayons in a bag. Choose red, blue, yellow, green, orange, pink, purple or another color to focus on for the day. Play a piece of music and let preschoolers dance around the room. When the music stops, draw a colored marker out of the bag. If you draw a blue marker, anyone wearing blue on his shirt is out and should take a seat. Start the music and have the pupils who are standing begin dancing again. Continue to play the game until everyone takes a seat.

    Color Dig

    • Get four egg cartons. Color the inside bottom of three egg cups green. Repeat with three blue, three red and three yellow. Hide different-colored teddy bear counters or marbles in a sand table. Have preschoolers search through the sand for teddy bear counters to match the colors in their egg cartons. When preschoolers find a teddy bear that matches, they place it in the corresponding egg cup. If they don't find a match, they bury the teddy bear counter for the next person to find. Celebrate when preschoolers fill up their carton. Keep the game exciting by changing out the colors in the egg carton or the items preschoolers dig for by burying crayons, buttons or marbles.

    Scavenger Hunt

    • Have preschoolers go on a scavenger hunt. Call out a color such as yellow and give students one minute to find yellow items in the classroom. Have students bring their yellow items back to the meeting area to share. Go on a scavenger hunt for a different color every day.

    If You're Wearing Red

    • Bring preschoolers together in a group. Sing the following song with them to the tune of "The Muffin Man": "If you're wearing red today, red today, red today, if you're wearing red today, stand up and say, 'Hoo-ray!'" Have preschoolers wearing red stand up and shout hooray. Repeat the verse with other colors. Allow preschoolers to stand up and shout hooray for all colors they have on.
