Directions for Dyed Pasta Shapes

When you have plenty of time but not plenty of money, dying pasta shapes is the perfect craft to please your children and your budget. After you wait overnight for your shapes to dry, you end up with perfect beads for macaroni necklaces or decorations for your latest craft projects. Uncooked pasta comes in a variety of shapes and sizes and glues easily onto paper and other surfaces, so keep your dyed pasta shapes stored and ready in your craft cabinet for when inspiration strikes.

Things You'll Need

  • Uncooked pasta shapes
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Food coloring
  • Large plastic zip-top bag

Instructions

    • 1

      Pour uncooked pasta into large plastic bag. Use separate bags for each color you want to dye.

      Pour 1/4 cup of rubbing alcohol per 2 cups of uncooked pasta into the plastic bag.

      Add 1 tbsp. of food coloring to the plastic bag. Use more food coloring for darker, more intense colors.

      Close the plastic bag, being careful to seal completely.

      Shake the plastic bag to mix food coloring, alcohol and pasta.

      Leave the pasta in the bag for at least one hour while it absorbs the food coloring and alcohol.

      Turn the bag over and let pasta sit for another 30 minutes to ensure even absorption.

      Pour the colored pasta onto newspaper or wax paper and let dry completely, preferably overnight.
