Children can spark their imaginations by creating a winter scene. Have them draw their neighborhood, a forest or mountains. Instruct them to paint the entire picture with a mix of 16 oz. of salt and hot water. Once the salt dries it will look like crystals. Or, have them paint a summer scene, then with white paint, paint snow on the picture to create a winter wonderland. This craft will help them differentiate winter from summer. Use glitter to create a winter scene. Instruct the children to paint snow on black construction paper, using glue, and before it dries add the glitter. It will create a beautiful painting.
Explain to children that snowflakes are never alike with crafts. Have the kids fold a white piece of construction paper several times and make cutouts in different places. When they open it, they will see they are all different. Or, use a doily to create a snowflake. Place it on a piece of construction paper and color with blue paint all over the doily. Remove the doily while still wet and sprinkle with glitter. Alternately, sprinkle white, thin tempera paint with a brush on a circle of black construction paper. Fold and open to create a snowflake design.
Kids love to make snowmen out of real snow, and they also enjoy making snowmen crafts. Use three round paper plates to create snowmen. Make the eyes, nose and buttons with crafts foam. Instruct the kids to add sticks for the arms. Kids can also make snowmen with balloons. Have them dip different-sized balloons into white paint, then press them on a piece of black construction paper to create a snowman.Or, create a snowman with marshmallows. Print a picture of a snowman or draw one on a piece of paper. Have the kids lick the marshmallows to glue them on the picture of the snowman.
There are many ways to create snowball crafts. Have the kids glue cotton balls on a piece of construction paper and create their own snowballs. Or, have them draw kids having a snow fight and glue cotton balls for the snowballs. Create snowballs with small balloons. Have them dip pieces of yarn into a mixture of glue and water. Glue them to the balloon and sprinkle with glitter once it's all covered. Once the yarn is dry, pop the balloon and remove it to have a beautiful snowball.
