Purchase a foam or soft wood picture frame from your local craft or dollar store. Gather up any large beads, buttons, scraps of ribbon, glitter and washable paint. While supervising your toddler, allow her to decorate the frame however she'd like. She can pick the colors of paint, or glue on various embellishments with your help. If you've managed to find some puppy stickers, she should be able to stick these on independently. When the frame is completed and dried, print out a picture of a dog off the Internet, or use a photograph of your own family pet to complete your picture frame.
Cut out two pieces of felt in the shape of a puppy. Cut out eyes, nose, collar and a dog bone in various colors of felt. Glue the two puppy shape pieces together with a glue gun and allow to fully cool. With a glue stick, allow your toddler to stick on the various other parts--eyes, ears, etc., and create his own puppy puppet. Allow to dry, and during nap time, secure the pieces with the glue gun. When your toddler awakens, he will have a new friend to interact with.
Print out a familiar dog friend on computer paper. Some ideas are Snoopy, Pluto, or Clifford the Big Red Dog (see Resources, below). Purchase some dot paints (like Bingo blotters) and allow your toddler to decorate the page with these paints. You can turn this into an educational game by drawing items around the dog, such as biscuit treats that the child will then count as he colors. Hang the completed picture on the wall for your child to enjoy.
Do not abandon your puppy dog craft, but rather save it for a season, bringing it out every few days for your child to rediscover. You will enjoy watching your toddler interact with his creations in different ways, using his imagination to bring his puppy to life or to place the picture frame in a new location throughout the house.
