How to Keep the Kids in a Straight Line

When you think about teaching children, reading, writing and arithmetic are probably what come to mind. You may not realize how much time is spent imparting basic social skills, including listening, being respectful, working in groups and walking in lines. During fire or severe-weather drills, children need to know how to move quickly, quietly and in an orderly fashion to a safe meeting place. Also, keeping kids together in a line helps adults monitor the whole group, ensuring each child is accounted for when you reach your destination.

Instructions

Create a walking rope with hand-holds using duct tape and fabric scraps. Wrap fabric strips around a length of rope, creating several loops. Secure the loops with duct tape. When you have created enough fabric hand-holds for each child, wrap the entire rope in duct tape for durability and to prevent scratches from the rope. Children older than 5 are able to hold a rope without hand-holds. In this case, a smooth piece of rope will suffice. For youth under 5, hand-holds keep the children evenly spaced and discourage them from letting go of the rope while walking. When moving from one place to another, instruct each child to grasp a hand-hold loop. Have an adult hold the lead of the rope to guide the children, and place at the rear of the line another grown-up who keeps an eye out for stragglers.

Separate children into pairs of line-walking partners. Try to partner inexperienced children with older ones or with those who are accustomed to walking in a straight, quiet line. Have each pair of kids hold hands and be responsible for one other while walking in line.

Line the children up from shortest to tallest. Instruct each child to put his right hand on the right shoulder of the person in front of him. Play a marching game in this formation, allowing kids to practice the proper pace for walking in a line. Ask children to line up in the same manner any time it's necessary to travel as a group.
