Give the children paper keyboards. Talk about how the letters on the keyboard are funny because they are not in order. Read the letters on the keyboard out loud with the children.
Ask the children to point to the letters in their names on their paper keyboard. If a child does not know how to spell her name yet, give that child an index card that displays her name. Have the child match the letters from the index card to letters on the paper keyboard.
Show one or two children at a time that the letters on their paper keyboard are the same as the letters on a computer's keyboard.
Show the children the "Caps Lock" key on the computer keyboard. Explain that if they press the "Caps Lock" key, the letter they press on the keyboard will be a capital letter, and if they press the "Caps Lock" key again, any keyboard letter they press will be a lowercase letter. Remind the children that names always begin with a capital letter.
Instruct the children to type their name in a software program document. Using interesting and colorful fonts will make the lesson more entertaining for the kids.
