The official flag of Texas is known as "The Lone Star Flag." Its simplistic design is one that can be easy for preschool children to replicate. Give them a black and white line drawing of the state flag printed from your computer. Provide students with red and blue markers to color their own Texas flag. Show them with an example or picture of a real flag to use for reference. Attach a dowel rod to the flag so students can wave their Texas flag.
Texas' state flower is the bluebonnet. Teach your preschool students about the bluebonnet and show them photographs of the flowers growing in Texas. Give students a plain sheet of paper and ask them to create their own bluebonnet flowers. Provide them with blue stamping ink, and allow them to use their thumbprints to create bluebonnets on their paper. Once this is completed, give them a green marker to draw the stem of the flower, and then write the word "bluebonnet" on the top of the paper.
Each state has a unique license plate for its vehicles. Show students pictures of various license plates throughout the United States. Provide them with an example of Texas' plate using a photograph or an old recycled plate. Give students a rectangular piece of cardboard and use washable paints to paint it white. Once dry, use die-cut letters to glue on the plate. Finish the plate and allow them to decorate the rest of it.
Because Texas was the 28th state to join the Union, it was also the 28th state coin to be released in the new quarter series. Obtain Texas quarters from your local bank. Divide students in small groups and give them the coin to examine. Ask them to tell you about what they notice about the coin's color, images and words. Write the groups' observations on a large poster board and display it in your classroom. Title the poster, "Texas State Coin Observations."
