Winter Themed Crafts for Preschoolers

The seasons are a popular focus of study in the preschool curriculum, as it helps students learn about and observe the changes that occur in the environment with each season. When studying the winter season, engage children in craft projects associated with common elements of the season.
  1. Winter Tree

    • Have children create a winter tree similar to the one on the Kaboose website with finger paint. Paint the children's forearms and hands with brown finger paint and instruct them to press them onto light blue construction paper with their fingers spread open; this will serve as the trunk and branches of a tree. Set out white finger paint and have kids dip their fingers in the paint and use it to add snowy details to the tree. They may also use the finger paint to create snowflakes falling from the sky and a snow-covered ground. For an added effect, sprinkle iridescent or silver glitter onto the paint while it is wet.

    Glittering Snowflakes

    • Provide students with scissor cutting practice with this craft activity. Print out blackline images of snowflakes, or draw your own snowflake pictures and distribute them to children. Offer the kids safety scissors and instruct them to cut the snowflakes out. After cutting them out, instruct the children to use paintbrushes to cover them with glue and then sprinkle silver, iridescent or blue glitter onto the flakes. Once dry, punch a hole through the top of the snowflakes and string yarn through the holes. Use the yarn to hang the snowflakes on the ceiling, turning your classroom into a glistening winter wonderland.

    Pom-Pom Snowmen

    • Use craft pom-poms to create three-dimensional snowmen. Help children glue a white craft pom-pom onto a piece of poster board; this will be the base of the snowman. Have them glue two more pom-poms, one on top of the other, on top of the first pom-pom, creating a snowman's body. Provide children with small black craft pom-poms and have them glue them onto the bodies of their snowmen as buttons and instruct them to glue two to the snowmen's heads as eyes. Cut pieces of black yarn and instruct the children to glue them onto the heads, creating smiles for the snowmen. To complete the craft, children can wrap pieces of scrap fabric around their snowmen as scarves.

    Bird Feeders

    • Have children make a craft that will help feed the winter birds. Cut lengths of yarn and tie knots in the end of each one. Provide children with circular cereal pieces that have holes in the center of them. Instruct kids to string the cereal pieces onto the yarn. After they have filled their yarn with cereal pieces, tie the ends of the yarn together. Bring children outside to hang their bird feeders in trees and allow them to observe over the span of a few days to see if any food is gone or to see if they can actually catch birds eating from the feeders.
