What Preschool Rules Should Focus On

During preschool, children are taught that they are expected to follow the rules set for them by their parents, school officials and society. When establishing guidelines for children, think about more than just the dos and don'ts. Ensure that children are exposed to rules in a positive light and reinforce these rules in all aspects of a child's life
  1. Speak With an Indoor Voice.

    • A rule such as "use your indoor voice" will teach children the importance of maintaining volume control in public, as well as being respectful of others while they are talking. This rule emphasizes the behavior that is desired of children, rather than prohibiting negative behavior. Keeping the focus on positivity allows children to see the rules in a more positive light, and makes it more likely that they will follow the rule.

Be Kind to Yourself and Others

    • By promoting kindness in the classroom from an early age, children learn how to have meaningful interactions with one another and how to enjoy social interactions without bullying. This rule is important in young children because it instills a lesson that will carry through their life. Kindness encompasses a bevy of other lessons, such as respect, generosity, sharing and compassion.

Help Keep the Classroom Neat and Clean

    • Cleanliness is an important lesson to instill in young children because it adds value to their sense of ownership and experience in life. By emphasizing the word "help," this rule signifies that keeping the classroom orderly is a group task and involves team work. This promotes an appreciation for order that can affect the child throughout his life inside and outside of school.

    Smile

    • A simple rule such as "smile" promotes positivity and encourages students to keep each other smiling even when someone might not be feeling well. Teachers can use this rule to reiterate to students the idea of making the best of it and always staying positive. An easy rule such as this helps keep children happy and having fun, which is important to how well they learn.
