How to Get Preschoolers to Brush Teeth in Classroom

Preschoolers should brush teeth at least twice a day, but not all parents are as strict about dental hygiene as they should be. Requiring children to brush teeth in the classroom ensures that each child does at least one thorough brushing a day. Even children who brush their teeth at home benefit from an additional daily reminder of the importance of keeping teeth healthy. If young children learn to brush regularly, they may grow up knowing how to care for their teeth.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up brushes and toothpaste. Each student should bring in his own toothbrush and tube of toothpaste. Label everything and keep each child's brush in its own toothbrush holder so they don't touch one another.

    • 2

Make a poster demonstrating the steps to properly brushing your teeth. Hang the poster next to the sink where children will brush.

    • 3

Work brushing into your schedule, ideally after meal time. Hang a picture of a child brushing her teeth on your daily schedule so children know it's coming.

    • 4

Give a reminder a few minutes before tooth-brushing time. If children will be brushing their teeth after lunch, remind them as they're finishing eating what they're going to be doing next.

    • 5

Call each child to the sink one at a time. If you have multiple sinks in the classroom, one child can brush at each sink as long as there's a teacher stationed there to help.

    • 6

Help each child by preparing his toothbrush. The American Association of Pediatric Dentists recommending using a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Most preschoolers won't be able to brush their teeth properly and completely, so put on a pair of gloves and hold your hand over the child's to help him reach all his teeth and brush thoroughly.

Demonstrate how to rinse your mouth by filling your hands with water, taking a sip from them and spitting it into the sink. You may also fill a disposable paper cup with water for the child to use. Preschoolers often swallow their toothpaste rather than properly rinsing their mouths after brushing their teeth.
