Activity About Geese Footprints for Preschool

Play Dough

• Activities that build on what preschoolers already know are a good way to deepen their knowledge. Use play dough to promote the development of spatial and symbolic reasoning skills. Let children roll out play dough with a rolling pin, or flatten the dough using their hands. Make handprints by pressing down the hand in the dough, and make geese footprints using a small wooden stick. Geese have a long toe in the middle and two shorter toes on either side. Count the number of fingers and compare with the three-toed geese.

Walk Like a Goose

• Peruse the Internet or search books for photos of geese footprints. Talk about the way geese walk. Put on some music of your choice and let children walk around the room imitating the way geese turn their feet in slightly. The tracks alternate as a goose puts one foot in front of the other, so the tracks might be pointing slightly toward each other. Change the rhythm and let children walk around the room to different tempos without bumping into each other. Play follow the goose, similar to the game follow the leader. Let one child be the leader and the rest of the children walk in a line behind her.

Giant Footprints

• Let children make giant geese footprints. In advance, draw a giant goose footprint and print out a copy for each child. Talk about how the webbing joins the space between the toes and let children color in the giant footprints. Cut out the giant footprints, use masking tape, and glue the colorful prints over the floor in the classroom. Let children count the number of footprints. Rearrange the footprints in different ways and let children start counting the footprints from different places in the room.

Rhyme Time

• Talk about different words that rhyme with geese, such as peace and fleece. Cut out giant geese footprints and use masking tape to glue them onto the floor. Let children walk around the room, and practice saying different words that rhyme with geese when they step on a footprint. Make up a short story about geese making footprints in the snow or in the sand. Use the rhyme words to make the story funny and easy to remember.
