Read to preschoolers consistently. Choose the same hour every day to designate "Story Time." The preschooler gets used to reading with an adult and eventually tries to read on his own.
Talk about books you read. Ask him what he thinks of the art throughout the book or to point out who his favorite character was and why. Preschoolers get used to forming opinions and stories from books through discussion.
Show your preschooler books with colorful images or interactive displays. Encourage this creativity and zest for colors and images with pictures books. After you read the story to him and practice reading, encourage him to make up his own story just going by the pictures.
Purchase dual role reading books. In your local library or bookstore, seek out books that encourage your child to read with you. Generally, you read a part and then he takes a turn, so he begins to formulate words and learns how to articulate sentences.
Pull together a few simple props and act out the story you've just read. Challenge your preschooler to read a new book and once he finishes, he receives a new prop for his story such as a toy truck or stuffed animal.
