Weather Curriculum Themes for Preschool

Weather plays a part in the lives of all who live on the earth, including preschool children. They may wonder about what makes rain or snow. Prepare curriculum themes around different aspects of weather to help preschoolers understand weather and what it means in their lives. With interactive activities, the children learn about clouds, weather changes and view weather as a normal part of their day.
  1. View Clouds

    • Show pictures of different types of clouds such as cirrus, stratus, nimbus and cumulus. Explain what the different clouds look like and the weather that accompanies different cloud patterns. Take the preschool students outside and look at different cloud formations. Ask if they "see" anything in the clouds and allow them to use their imagination to tell stories. Let them draw pictures to illustrate their cloud stories. Have them use cotton balls, crayons and yarn to create the types of clouds.

    Drawing

    • Let the preschool children tell stories of positive or negative experiences with weather. One child might tell of being scared in a lightning storm. Another might share about making a snow person or angel. Another might talk about swimming in the summer. Have the children draw pictures of a good time they had being outside. Also have them draw pictures of the different types of weather and what people do, use or wear during that weather type. For example, for a rainy day, students might include an umbrella and rain boots.

    Match

    • Talk about how people dress in different types of weather. Bring a collection of items worn for different seasons such as boots, scarves, a swimsuit and a raincoat. Line up pictures of different weather on the board. As you hold up different items, the preschool students tell you in which type of weather a person would wear them by indicating the picture with that weather illustrated. Do this same exercise as a worksheet with the four weather pictures spread across the top of the page. Show pictures of different clothing items on the rest of the page. Students draw lines from the items to the correct picture.

    Weather Today

    • Talk about how weather changes season to season and day to day. Show pictures of sunny, rainy, snowy and cloudy days. Ask which type of weather happens more often in winter and which in other seasons. Create a weather board. The preschool students receive a paper-size piece of cardboard and a piece of felt the same size. Students glue the felt onto the cardboard. Use the board in the portrait, rather than the landscape, position. Measure 8 ½ inches from the top and mark a line across the width of the board. This divides the board. Have students color representations of the four types of weather. Back with felt and place on the bottom portion of the weather board. Head the top with "Today the Weather Is..." Add names of the students and hang up. Every day, the preschool students look outside, take one of the types of weather from the bottom of the board and place it in the middle of the top square under the heading.
