Choose one note card for every letter in the alphabet. Write one word on each card that begins with the letter that you have in mind. This word can be an object or even a person that your preschooler is familiar with. Cut out pictures that match the words from magazines or print them off of Internet sites that grant permission.
Help your preschooler to make an alphabet book. Cut construction paper pieces into halves so that the book is more preschooler-sized. Punch three holes in each piece and, once you have the stack, use yarn to tie the book together. Create an alphabet list for your preschooler. Ask your preschooler to put one letter on each page and then draw a picture that represents an item that begins with that letter.
According to the experts at the Family Education website, help your preschoolers to identify sounds. Cut out pieces of paper and print a letter on each piece. Show your preschooler pictures from the Internet or from magazines and ask him to point out objects that begin with that letter or that make the same sound as the letter.
Use note cards to print one letter from a word. For example, use three note cards to spell cat. Make a word list and make note cards for each word. Mix the note cards for each word up and ask your child to spell the word. Start with small words such as bird, glove, bat or air. Give your preschoolers plenty of time to sound out and organize the word without spelling it for them.
