Penguin-Themed Snack Ideas for Preschool Kids

The penguin is a cute and furry arctic friend that a lot of young children love. In preschool, the idea of building lessons around penguins can be enhanced by creating snacks of the same theme. Children will take joy in these animals that waddle and a penguin-themed snack for the unit will add to the excitement of learning.
  1. Cookies

    • Visit hobby and baking specialty stores to find penguin-shaped cookie cutters. Using sugar cookie dough, roll out the dough and press the cutter into it. Create the shapes and transfer them to a baking sheet. Bake the cookie according to the recipe directions. When the cookies are completely cooled from baking, decorate them with black and white icing and use decorations such as candy dots to create the eyes and nose.

    Penguin Oreo

    • Give each child a chocolate cream cookie, a chocolate candy kiss and two blue and one orange M & M's candy. Have the children split their cookie in half and gently spread the cream evenly on both parts. Place the parts on a plate with one above the other. The teacher goes around the room with a plastic knife and cuts the chocolate candy kiss in half, from top to bottom. Each half will be laid on its side to create the flippers. Students will then place their M & M candies on the top cookie half to create eyes and a beak.

    Vegetable Penguins

    • Use two jumbo olives, a slice of raw carrot, veggie dip or cream cheese and a toothpick to make adorable vegetable penguin snacks. You will create the feet from a round slice of carrot. Lay the slice flat on cutting board and starting in the center make two diagonal cuts to the sides in the shape of a "V". For the body, take a jumbo black olive and cut a slit in it from top to bottom. Fill the slit in the olive with veggie dip or cream cheese and place it on top of the carrot feet. Place the "V" that you cut out of the carrot feet into the other olive to create a beak and set it on top of the stuffed olive. Hold the snack together by inserting a toothpick through the whole creation, from the head, through the stuffed olive body, down to the carrot feet for a delightful and healthy creation for your preschoolers.

    Penguin Cupcakes

    • Each snack uses one and a half chocolate cupcakes, so you will need to calculate your total number needed based upon the size of the class. After the cupcakes have cooled, frost them with chocolate frosting and cut them in half. Place two halves together with the tops touching and the bottoms separated slightly, about an inch. Fill the triangular space that is created with vanilla icing. This creates the body and wings. Place two pieces of dried pineapple in the vanilla icing for feet. Next, take one half of a cupcake and set it above the body to create the penguin's head. Because each half of the cupcakes are identical, it does not matter which half you use. You will use the other half for the next penguin. Place three small amounts of vanilla icing on the head in the eyes and beak spots. Then gently fix two brown chocolate candies for eyes and another piece of dried pineapple to create a beak. Set the entire creation onto a small paper plate for serving. You can use a couple of toothpicks through the head part of the penguin and down through the body to try to attach it for stability if you would like.
