Preschool Lesson Safety Themes

Preschoolers see the world as a place of wonder waiting to be explored, but they don’t recognize all the dangers everywhere around them. Teaching preschoolers about safety helps prepare them for the day when they have more independence. Children this age may be able to recite safety rules, but they can rarely apply them in real situations. They also lack proper judgment of speed, distance and height. Although they think they are “big kids,” preschoolers still need your guidance and supervision to stay safe.
  1. Crossing the Road

    • Paint a 2 by 4 foot piece of cardboard black. When it dries, tape rectangles of yellow paper lengthwise down the middle to make a two-lane road. At one end, tape two strips of paper across the “road” to make a crosswalk. Cut out two large circles, one green and one red, and tape them each to a paint stick. Teach the children that green means “go” and red means "stop.” Hold the signs up one at a time in front of the class and have the children tell you whether they mean stop or go. Ask a child to stand near the crosswalk and ask you if they can cross the street. Show them the stop or go sign. They should look both ways before crossing.

    Fire Safety

    • Invite a uniformed fireman to talk to the children about fire safety. Review fire safety rules. Such as don’t play with matches, don’t play around a fire or grill, don’t put a finger through the flame of a candle and never let a candle burn without an adult in the room. Practice “Stop, Drop and Roll” with the children. Hang a sheet just high enough that the children can crawl underneath it and have them practice crawling to escape a fire. Teach the children the escape route from the classroom and rehearse being orderly and quiet while they “escape.”

    Water Safety

    • Tell the children they should never go into a swimming pool, river, creek or lake without adult permission and supervision. Never push anyone into the water or try to push them underwater. Stay in the shallow end of the water and wear “water wings.” Bring several life vests and safety rings to class. Tell the class they should always wear a life vest when going on a boat or canoe. Let the children take turns putting on a life vest and gently tossing a safety ring to "rescue" other children.

    Bike Safety

    • Teach the class they should always wear a bike helmet, knee pads and elbow pads when they ride a bike. Bring in safety gear for the children to try on. If your preschool has tricycles or other bike-like toys, make sure the children always wear safety gear.
Discuss bicycle safety rules such as only one child on a bike at a time; don’t ride in the street; don’t attempt bicycle tricks; don’t crash into others, and when riding on the sidewalk, stop at driveways to make sure a car isn’t backing out or driving in.
