Fun Preschool Student-of-the-Week Activities for Your Classroom

Students deserve to be recognized and rewarded for their dedication and hard work. Instilling a sense of pride and accomplishment is important with young children. Acknowledge students individually to promote self-awareness in the classroom as well as motivate students to achieve. Student-of-the-week activities are exciting because they give a student the chance to shine. For a whole week, the rest of the students are able to learn more about the star student and be inspired to step up academically.
  1. Favorites

    • When a student is selected student of the week, tell him the Friday prior so he can prepare over the weekend for the upcoming week of activities. On Monday, take his picture with an instant or digital camera and place it on the student of the week bulletin board along with his best classwork. To begin the week, the student can focus on the theme of favorites. He can bring in his favorite toys to share with the other students. For circle time, he can ask the teacher to read his favorite picture books. He can also share his favorite songs on CDs for the students to enjoy during snack time, recreation or movement.

    Scrapbook

    • Ask the star student to fill up an empty scrapbook with memories and symbols of her family and life. For example, she can include a picture from her third birthday or a snapshot of her favorite doll. On Tuesday, she can pass the scrapbook around the classroom, explaining the significance behind each page.

    Special Lunch and Dessert

    • Wednesday, award the student of the week with a special lunch featuring foods he likes. The student is can invite one other person to partake in the lunch. This person can be a family relative or another classmate. Before the end of the day, the entire class can celebrate the star student's success by having a small celebration with ice cream and music. The star student gets to decide on the flavor of ice cream and the choice of music.

    Anecdotes, Videos and Pictures

    • Thursday, the star student can bring in a brief family video, family vacation album, family tree or a letter from her parents sharing a funny or special story about their child. If the student would like, the parents can come in and share the story in person and bring a special snack for the class.

    Friendship Frame

    • Friday, the students can make a friendship frame for the student. The teacher takes a class picture with the student of the week in the center. The class works on creating special messages and pictures on a poster board with magic markers and glitter. After they complete the design and messages, the teacher can glue the class picture to the middle of the poster and frame it for the star student to take home.
