A Preschool Craft on a Frog's Life Cycle

The life cycle of a frog is a great lesson for preschoolers as an introduction to biology and life sciences. Because the stages of a frog's life are clearly defined by the appearance of the egg, tadpole, froglet and adult frog, it is easy for students to grasp that each stage is different. Preschool crafts involving the frog's life cycle can take a number of forms.
  1. Play-dough Life Cycle

    • This craft uses one of the most common elements in a preschool classroom: Play-dough. The teacher can ask groups of students to each design one stage of the life cycle, or students can work on making the whole life cycle by themselves. The eggs, tadpoles, froglets and adult frogs can be placed around a makeshift pond when completed. Students can also make labels that explain each stage, and set the models up in chronological order to show the growth of the animal.

    Coloring Book Craft

    • Teachers can use the Internet to locate a coloring book template that has all the stages in the frog's life cycle, or use the link in Resources. Preschoolers color in the pictures for each stage and write out which stage it is underneath the picture. This activity is a great way to teach preschoolers the basics of writing and handling pens and pencils. Once completed each student's pages can be stapled together to be taken home as a keepsake booklet.

    Cut and Paste Craft

    • This frog life-cycle craft requires scissors, construction paper, glue and bubble wrap. Students cut shapes out of colored paper such as brown tadpoles and green frogs and glue them around a pond. They can make the pond out of tin foil and decorate it with green lilypads. Bubblewrap makes an excellent model for frog eggs once a small dot is drawn in the center of each bubble. The students also put arrows around the pond to indicate the direction of the cycle from egg to frog.

    Peek-A-Boo Craft

    • This is a preschool frog-cycle craft that teaches a bit of recycling, too. The main component for this craft are leftover lids from boxes of sanitary wipes. Each lid is labeled with a stage of the life cycle and they are arranged around a drawing of a pond. Underneath each lid is a drawing of the life-cycle stage it represents. The recycling aspect of the project can be used to teach students about the impacts of pollution on frog habitats.
