The teacher will tell children the story of how David killed Goliath. Preschool children can create a craft by making their own bag of stones, like those David used to slay the giant. You will need five flat stones for each child, which you can purchase or find. You will also need acrylic paint to decorate the stones. Children can wear big T-shirts so they don't get paint in their clothes. They can paint the stones as desired, allow to air dry for about 15 minutes, then add decorative touches. During the 15 minutes waiting period, they can sing songs, color, or practice a simple memory verse. Place stones in a paper bag with the child's name on it.
Most preschoolers tolerate the Bible lesson but love the coloring pages. For these young ones, you can tell the story as you supervise while they color. If you like, use two coloring pages for those who finish quickly. Keep the Bible lesson short -- five to 10 minutes should be plenty of time to tell the children the story. Depending on which coloring page you use, choose from one of the following stories: David as a shepherd boy, David slays the giant or David and King Saul.
You can read the story of how David killed Goliath from a children's Bible or use an online version. Write the words, "The battle is the Lord's" on a paper plate for each child. This can be done ahead of time or with the help of assistants, depending on the number of children you have. Children can use five small stones and glue them on the plate or find their own as part of the activity. You can also cut "stones" for them out of construction paper.
Using a children's Bible, tell preschoolers the story of how King Saul was sad and David came to play the harp and sing for him. Relate this to children by reminding them they can encourage others as well. Make a happy/sad face craft using wooden craft sticks. Cut two circles, between 3 inches to 5 inches, for each child. Glue them back to back, with the craft stick in between. Decorate as plain or elaborate as desired, depending on the time and amount of help you have. Use yarn for hair, buttons for eyes, construction paper for lips, tin foil to make a crown and crayons.
