Are schools closed for Columbus Day?

Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that is observed on the second Monday in October. On this day, many schools, and government offices are closed, except in the few places (Alabama and Hawaii) where it is a mandatory school/work holiday. However, some employers may also choose to close on this day, even in states where it is not a mandated school holiday.
