What is the history of King George V secondary school?

1933-1934:

King George V School for Boys was built in 1933, by Essex County Council. The school was opened in September 1934, with 514 boys on the roll. The headmaster was Mr Harold Fletcher, formerly of Woodford County High School.

The school was originally housed in a temporary building on the present site, while the permanent building was being built. The permanent building was completed in September 1935, and the school moved in.

1935-1939:

In the early years, the school quickly established a reputation for academic excellence and sporting prowess. By 1939, the school had over 800 boys on the roll.

1939-1945:

During the Second World War, the school was evacuated to Braintree, Essex. The school returned to Southend in 1945.

1945-1970:

After the war, the school continued to grow and develop. In 1951, the school became a co-educational grammar school. In 1965, the school became comprehensive.

1970-2000:

In the 1970s and 1980s, the school underwent a period of change and expansion. In 1979, the school became a sixth form college. In 1985, the school was renamed King George V School and Community College.

2001-Present:

In 2001, the school became a specialist sports college. In 2010, the school became an academy.

Today, King George V Academy is a thriving school with over 1,500 students on the roll. The school offers a wide range of academic and extracurricular opportunities. King George V Academy is a popular school with a good reputation in the local community.
