How to Solve Negative Equations

Negative numbers are numbers less than zero. Solving equations using negative numbers involves understanding the numeracy of negative numbers. Grasping the value of negative numbers before attempting any of the four mathematical algorithms --- addition, subtraction, multiplication and division --- helps in the understanding of the problems presented with negative numbers. After the value of the numbers and what they represent are clear, you can solve equations with negative numbers.

Instructions

    • 1

Add the value of the addends to arrive at a sum for the equation when two or more negative numbers are being added. A negative number added to another negative number results in an answer further away from zero. So the resulting answer will also be a negative number. After adding the numbers, place a negative sign in front of the sum.

    • 2

Change the subtraction sign to an addition sign when subtracting two negative numbers. Change the sign of the number after the subtraction sign to a positive number. Changing the problem to addition is possible because subtracting a negative number is the same as adding its opposite. Find the difference of the two numbers. Place the sign of the larger number in front of the difference.

    • 3

Multiply the integers when multiplying negative numbers. Ignore the signs of the numbers when multiplying. If both of the factors are negative numbers, the resulting product will be a positive number. If only one of the factors is negative, the product will be negative.

    • 4

Divide the two negative numbers. Ignore the signs of the numbers. After you have found the quotient, place a positive sign in front of it. The rule about the sign is the same as when multiplying integers. If the signs of the two numbers being divided are the same, the resulting quotient is positive. If the signs are different --- one positive and one negative --- the answer is negative.
