How to Make a Linear T-Chart

With a T-chart, you can determine x and y values to plot according to values generally given for x. Learning to use a T-chart is a fundamental skill for solving more complex equations. The only skills you need to create and complete a T-chart is the ability to multiply, add and subtract.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a two column chart with a wider right column than the left. Label the left side of the chart x and the right side of the chart with the equation you are given. For example: y=5x+2. The numbers will vary and the + sign might be a - sign.

    • 2

Select numbers for x, and list them underneath the "x" column. For example, choose 2, 4, 6, and 10. Repeat the same equation as you had originally on the right side of the column. Replace x with the number you have on the left. As in: y=5(2)+2, y=5(4)+2.....

    • 3

Solve for y. Using the examples from previous steps, y=5(2)+2= 12, y=5(4)+2=22, so when x=2 then y=12, when x=4 then y=22 and so forth. For your answer, you will need to format the solution in this format: (x,y). Example: y=5(2)+2=12, (2,12).
