Games for Practicing Possessive Nouns

Apostrophe placement is the key to writing possessive nouns correctly. Group competition encourages students to think and discuss their answers before sharing them with classmates. Divide your class into teams and make learning about apostrophes fun. Use these games throughout the year to reinforce and review apostrophes in possessive nouns.
  1. Apostrophe Race

    • For this game, teams of students are given a list of singular and plural nouns. Teams must race to the board or posters and write the correct form of the possessive noun. The first team to finish with all nouns written correctly will be declared the winner.

    Mission Apostrophe

    • Use a paragraph or paragraphs from a novel for teens or an interesting article from a newspaper that contains apostrophes. Print the article without the apostrophes, but tell students how many apostrophes are needed. Students place the apostrophes correctly in the article. The first team to complete the mission by placing all the apostrophes correctly wins. Make sure the paragraphs or article contains plural nouns that end in "s" as well as possessive nouns.

    Fill in the Blank

    • Give pairs of students a chart with the following headings: singular, singular possessive, plural and plural possessive. Write one word correctly in each row. Students must fill in the other words correctly. The first team to finish correctly wins.

    Find the Imposters

    • Give pairs or small groups of students paragraphs with apostrophes in every word that ends in "s." Students must eliminate the apostrophes from the words that are simply possessive.
