Fun Noun Games for Students in 6th Grade

Learning the parts of speech is not necessarily always a difficult topic for students to comprehend; however, it can be a bit dull and dry. Therefore, consider incorporating some noun games into your lesson plans to teach your sixth graders, capturing their focus and attention in the process.
  1. Board Race

    • Divide the class into two teams. Have one team create a list of typical countable nouns and the other team create a list of uncountable nouns, such as "luggage" or "deer." Once they have made their lists, ask them to go up to the blackboard. One member on the team writes a word on the board. Once she is done, she passes the chalk to the next member who writes a word and so forth. When you yell, "Stop!" the team with the most words on the board wins.

    Writing Stories with Nouns

    • Depending upon how difficult you want to make the assignment, write a list of three to 10 nouns on the board. Tell students that they must create a story that uses all of the nouns. You might choose to tell them that they cannot use any other nouns in their story, except for the ones that you listed. Another option is to limit the amount of other nouns they are permitted to use.

    Irregular Plurals Tic-tac-toe

    • Create a board with three rows of three squares each and have a different noun in each square. Place words that have an irregular plural form in each box. Some examples are radius, criterion, shelf, sheep and woman. Have two students play at a time or divide the class into two teams. The students can put an X or an O in any empty space once they give the correct plural form of the noun.

    Error Correction Games

    • Provide all of the students with a series of sentences or a short paragraph that uses nouns incorrectly after reviewing the incorrect use of proper nouns, common nouns and noun clauses. Have students work on these sheets individually. Award a small prize to the first three to five students who correctly complete the assignment. You might give a no homework pass or five extra points on the next test.
