What Makes a Good Middle School Student?

The middle school years, typically fourth or fifth through eighth grade, are years of in-depth and accelerated academic growth and maturation. Success in middle school hinges on academic focus and a recognition that success in middle school determines success in high school and in life. Developing good academic skills is essential to achieve success in middle school.
  1. Good Organizational and Study Skills

    • A good middle school student is organized, works to develop good study skills and recognizes the importance of developing these skills. The benefit of developing organization and study skills ensures that a student meet assignment due dates, take good notes and adequately prepare for testing. Good middle school students use an agenda, notebook or other organization aid to keep track of study information.

    Focused and Goal Oriented

    • It is imperative that middle school students are focused and goal oriented. Middle school student who recognize the importance of setting and achieving goals will be much more likely to be successful. It may be easy to get sidetracked by the social happenings and relationships of his peers, but the goal oriented student will not let the social scene interfere with academic achievement. Goal-oriented students focus in class and after school.

    Think for Themselves

    • The middle school years are characterized by an increase in social experiences and mark the beginning of elevated peer pressure. The successful middle school student may consciously or subconsciously evaluate his peer relationships and what impact they may or may not have on his success in school. These students tend to shy away from behavior in school or out of school that might stymie success.

    Plan for College

    • It is not too early to plan for college during the middle school years. A good middle school student recognizes that life beyond high school is the ultimate goal. Though saving for college may or may not be within every student's grasp, there are actions that he can take in preparation for college. He can speak to the various adults about college and about his personal interests that might align with a potential career.
