Why does k represent the constant of proportionality?

The letter 'k' is conventionally used to represent the constant of proportionality because it's the first letter of the word "constant". There's no deeper mathematical reason; it's simply a widely adopted convention, making it easy to understand the meaning in equations. Other letters could be used, but 'k' has become the standard.
