How many different keys are possible in the DES scheme?

The DES (Data Encryption Standard), formerly known as DEA (Data Encryption Algorithm) is a symmetric-key block cipher that uses a 56-bit key. This means that there are 2^56, or approximately 72 quadrillion, possible keys for the DES scheme.
