What is a straightedge in math?

In mathematics, a straightedge is an idealized tool used in geometric constructions. It's a ruler without markings; it can only be used to draw a straight line between two points. You can't measure distances with it, only create lines. It's a crucial element in classical compass-and-straightedge constructions.
