What is a schilling coin?

Austrian schilling

It was the national currency of Austria from 1925 until 31 December 2001, when the euro was introduced as Austria's currency. It was subdivided into 100 Groschen. The schilling was initially linked to the value of one paper kilogram (two pounds) of rye at the Vienna grain market. Its value in terms of gold has historically varied, however.

East African schilling

was the currency of the British East African Protectorate, consisting of the modern states of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, from 1921. This replaced the rupee in circulation after the collapse of the German colonial empire in World War I. The East African Currency Board in London acted as the central bank for the country, and the East African schilling was pegged to sterling at a rate of 1 schilling = 1 shilling sterling. The East African schilling was replaced in 1966 by the Kenya shilling, Tanzania shilling and Uganda shilling, all which adopted a par value of 1 shilling = 1 shilling sterling.

Somali schilling

was the currency of the Trust Territory of Somaliland between 1949 and 1960. It replaced the Italian Somali centesimo at the rate of 1 schilling = 1 centesimo. After becoming independent in 1960, the State of Somaliland retained the schilling. In July 1960, Italian Somaliland became independent and formed a union with the State of Somaliland, creating the Somali Republic. The schilling was replaced by the Somali shilling at a rate of 1 schilling = 1 Somali shilling.
