Why are children with physical disabilities and other health impairment placed in self contained classes who have mental retardation?

Children with physical disabilities and other health impairments are not typically placed in self-contained classes with students who have mental retardation. In fact, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires that students with disabilities be educated in the least restrictive environment (LRE) possible, which means that they should be placed in general education classrooms whenever possible.

There are some cases where a student with a physical disability or other health impairment may be placed in a self-contained class, but this is usually only done when the student's disability is so severe that they cannot be successfully educated in a general education classroom. Even in these cases, the student should still have the opportunity to participate in general education activities as much as possible.

It is important to remember that students with disabilities are individuals, and their needs will vary. The best educational placement for a student with a physical disability or other health impairment will depend on the student's individual needs and abilities.
